Building Project Update February 2009

2/27/09

East Addition

Workers on the fourth floor OB/Perinatal Services department project continue to make great progress. Sheet rock and electrical work is at 95 percent completion, and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) is 90 percent done. Ceramic tiling in the restrooms and showers is at 80 percent completion, and wall preparation, including painting, is 25 percent finished.

Millwork (cabinetry), which includes custom headwall units for each patient room, will arrive
Feb. 27 with installation scheduled to begin March 2. Construction completion and turnover to owner (VVMC) is on schedule for July 9 with the Arizona Department of Health Services (DHS) and architectural licensure and approval to follow.

There are many requirements to be met in any construction project. Before a new area can be occupied it must receive local (city) approval. Before a new patient area can be occupied it too must receive local approval, and additionally must be approved by the Arizona DHS architectural review team. When a new service is added during a construction project, as is the case with the fourth floor OB/Perinatal Services department – for example, a new operating room and C-section suite is being incorporated into the unit – approval must be obtained from the city and the Arizona DHS architectural review team, and the service also is required to successfully complete a DHS licensing review process.

Internal

Emergency

Work continues on Phase 3A of the project which will open the new corridor from the north exterior into the building. The corridor will serve as an interim EMS entry into the ED, and also will be used by Materials Management, Plant Operations, EVS and those employees parking on the north side of the campus. This space will include six new rapid treatment rooms and key support space. Phase 3A is scheduled for state DHS architectural approval on March 6 with turnover to VVMC on
March 9.

Phase 3B, which includes the new ED canopy; patient walk-in entry; and waiting, reception and triage areas; is scheduled for completion May 15 with an opening date of May 19. This will mark a significant milestone for the ED project and the ED’s enhanced ability to serve our current and future patients.

Phase 4 converts the existing waiting room and reception area into a new EMS ambulance entry, and three new trauma bays. Phase 5 converts the existing trauma area into three behavioral health holding rooms, and staff support area which includes a kitchen, locker and equipment storage space.

Second floor
Beginning March 9 and continuing through August, the former Transcare unit will be the temporary home to Cardiology Services while construction takes place in the current Cardiology Services area. This construction will include Cardiology Services, new Patient Registration, new Gift Shop and a new outpatient Lab draw suite with four stations.

On March 23, the current Gift Shop will be relocated to what is currently the Linen Supply Room next to the Chapel. This will allow for renovations to a new main entry lobby and the new Gift Shop, scheduled for completion in August.
