Insomnia and Sleep Apnea – “Take Note” Sedona Library Lecture Series Feb. 8

Jan. 25, 2012

Verde Valley Medical Center (VVMC) is sponsoring the “Take Note” Sedona Library Lecture Series. The Wednesday, Feb. 8 lecture, Insomnia and Sleep Apnea, is the last of three lectures on sleep apnea and related conditions. This lecture will feature Jeffrey Arnold, M.D., and Donald Curran, D.O. The lecture begins at 5 p.m. at the Sedona Library, 3250 White Bear Rd., Sedona. To R.S.V.P. or for more information on this free event, call 928 639-6551.

Drs. Arnold and Curran will discuss the connection between insomnia and sleep apnea and the importance of being diagnosed for both of these conditions.

Insomnia is a condition where sleep is poor and not adequate. Many people with insomnia have difficulty falling asleep, wake up frequently during the night with difficulty returning to sleep, wake up too early in the morning, or don’t feel refreshed after sleep. The cause of insomnia, such as sleep apnea, is sometimes much more serious and should be diagnosed and treated.

Dr. Arnold is board-certified in Sleep Medicine, Pulmonary Disease and Internal Medicine. He also was board-certified Critical Care. He is the co-medical director of VVMC’s Sleep Center and has been a member of the VVMC Medical Staff since 1984.

Dr. Curran is board-certified in Sleep Medicine, Family Medicine, Geriatrics and Psychiatry. He is the co-medical director of VVMC’s Sleep Center and has been a member of the VVMC Medical Staff since 2004.

The Sleep Center at VVMC can perform 24 sleep studies per week by operating four sleep rooms, six nights each week. Types of sleep disorders that can be diagnosed in the Sleep Center include OSA (breathing stops during sleep), insomnia (difficulty staying asleep), narcolepsy (difficulty staying awake), periodic limb movement disorders or restless leg syndrome (involuntary movement of the legs or arms during sleep), REM sleep behavior disorder and parasomnias such as sleep walking, sleep talking, teeth grinding and nightmares.
