New patient warming system in surgery

June 1, 2009

Verde Valley Medical Center recently introduced use of the Bair Paws ® patient adjustable warming system in the Surgical Services department. These one-use patient warming gowns allow patients to choose the temperature that is just right for them with an easy-to-use temperature controller.

The Bair Paws gown fits like a traditional cotton patient gown, and feels like soft flannel. It wraps completely around the body for full coverage and ties on the side and behind the neck. There are hose ports on the shoulder and at the bottom of the gown. A healthcare professional connects the warming unit hose to one of the ports and turns the warming unit on, allowing air to flow into the gown through tiny holes in the gown’s air channels. The patient adjusts the air temperature by turning the knob on the temperature controller.

VVMC chose to introduce the disposable gowns into the Surgical Services area, which is kept at a cooler temperature than other areas of the hospital. The gowns offer advanced patient warming technology which helps avoid unintended hypothermia, and increases patient comfort and satisfaction.
