Catch breast cancer early; free breast self exam workshops offered

Sept. 13, 2010

The Cancer Centers of Northern Arizona Healthcare – Sedona Campus and Verde Valley Medical Center are offering free breast self exam workshops. These two-hour workshops teach women how to perform breast self exams and include detailed instructions using specialized models by certified breast health trainers. The next class is 10 a.m. - noon, Thursday, Sept. 16 in VVMC’s Education Center, 269 S. Candy Lane.

Two classes will be held during the month of October in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The classes are from 10 a.m. – noon on Tuesday, Oct. 19 and Thursday, Oct. 28, in the Education Center. Seating is limited, so an R.S.V.P. is recommended by calling 928 204-4160.

The workshops are one of the services offered through the Cancer Center’s Breast Cancer Resource Center which provides education, resources and support services for women who have a breast cancer diagnosis and those wanting to prevent breast cancer.

Breast cancer affects one out of every eight women, making it the most common type of cancer in women other than skin cancer. Yavapai County has the highest incidence rate of breast cancer in Arizona’s 15 counties. Because the prevalence of breast cancer is so high, the Cancer Centers are committed to helping women discover this disease early. Early detection is the most effective and efficient tool to identify treatment options and increase long-term survival rates.

The Cancer Centers of Northern Arizona Healthcare, with campuses in Flagstaff and Sedona, is a non-profit cancer system devoted to impacting cancer in our communities through advanced treatment options, early detection and prevention.
