Fit Kids of Arizona is a regional community health initiative developed by Verde Valley Medical Center, Flagstaff Medical Center and Northern Arizona Healthcare addressing one of the largest healthcare concerns facing the U.S. – childhood obesity. The program helps children and their families learn healthy lifestyle choices while reducing the problems and illnesses associated with excess weight. The Fit Kids team focuses on assessing and improving the possible causes of excess body weight in children through medical examinations, physical activity counseling, nutrition counseling and behavioral change. Since opening in September 2009 at Verde Valley Medical Center, more than 200 children have been referred to the Verde Valley Fit Kids of Arizona program; more than 480 children have been referred to the program at Flagstaff Medical Center since January 2009.
