Verde Valley Medical Center’s (VVMC) Senior Lifestyles Behavioral Health Program and the Verde Valley Senior Citizens Center are hosting a free seminar to educate the community about depression in older adults. The free seminar is 12:30 – 1 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 23 at the Verde Valley Senior Citizens Center, 500 E. Cherry. For more information or to RSVP, call 300-4362.
Nancy Ryba, L.C.S.W., VVMC Senior Lifestyles Behavioral Health Program, is a social worker who specializes in helping older adults cope with depression. Ryba will discuss signs and symptoms and treatment and prevention tips for older adults suffering with depression. All members of the community are invited especially care givers, family members and friends of older adults who suffer from depression.
More than 2 million of the 34 million Americans age 65 and older suffer from some form of depression. Additionally, older Americans have the highest suicide rate of any age group with depression often linked to the suicide.
The Senior Lifestyles Behavioral Health Program is designed to diagnose and treat the complex problems of older adults. It is the only behavioral health unit north of Phoenix. In group and individual sessions, the program focuses on the many stressful issues associated with the aging process. Some of these may include grief, loneliness, coping with illness or physical disability, mental and behavioral changes, death and dying, changing life roles or status, and conflicts with adult children.
