The mission of the VVMC Medical Library is to provide complete, accurate and up-to-date medical information to physicians, staff, allied health practitioners, students, patients, and community members in our service area. This area includes, but is not limited to, Cottonwood, Clarkdale, Camp Verde, Jerome, Prescott, and Sedona.
Scope of Library Services
Informational and Educational Resources: The Library provides current medical information through access to a variety of databases to meet the informational and educational needs of the medical and nursing staffs, and administrative and ancillary departments. Currently, the Library does not loan its books due to its limited collection. A copier is available for patrons to photocopy portions of text, provided guidelines are followed in compliance with the Copyright Law of the United States, Title 17, United States Code, which governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials.
Information Services: The Library provides reference responses to phone, e-mail and individual requests. The Library will compile computerized bibliographies and process interlibrary loan requests in a timely manner. The Internet is utilized as an information resource for the medical community and the public.
Document Delivery: The Library will attempt to obtain any needed document or monograph through interlibrary loan or other appropriate means.
Cooperative Library Services: The Library maintains active cooperative relationships with other library resources including interlibrary loans, collection development, reference referrals, technical processes and other projects. The David G. Wells, M.D. Memorial Medical Library is a member of the Pacific Southwest Regional Medical Library Services, Central Arizona Biomedical Libraries Network, Central Arizona Libraries Cooperative, the Arizona State Library Association, and the National Library of Medicine.
The David G. Wells, M.D. Memorial Medical Library utilizes the National Library of Medicine’s Classification System. The library has a small collection of core medical texts; however, the majority of reference materials are available in full text on AZHIN, MD/First Consult and Nursing Consult. The Library Committee uses a variety of methods for the acquisition of materials including the Brandon-Hill List for Small Medical Libraries, Library for Internists, and several Nursing references, reviews and publishing information as guides for purchase. The CME/Library Committee also considers recommendations for purchases from Medical Staff members and staff.
The library associate performs searches for patrons and/or will assist patrons who choose to search on their own. Training for any of these systems is provided on an as-needed/as-requested basis. AZHIN can be accessed from an office or home computer by any physician or staff member that has been issued a password by the VVMC AZHIN Library associate. All databases are provided by Verde Valley Medical Center at no cost to its users.
Library Hours: The Library is staffed Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Access to the Library after hours and on weekends is made possible by contacting the Clinical Resources staffing coordinator at ext. 36257 or by asking the operator to contact Security. Physicians may use their access code for keyless entry. Phone: 928 639-6444
