 In an emergency,
always call 911. |
Guardian Medical Transport
Guardian Medical Transport, a
division of Flagstaff Medical Center, serves more than 6,000 square
miles of Northern Arizona. From the top of the San Francisco Peaks to
the south rim of the Grand Canyon, our team is dedicated to providing
prompt pre-hospital emergency medical services and non-emergent
transport 24-hours a day, seven days a week. Guardian ambulances respond
to the 911 system from three bases within Flagstaff city limits and since
May 2000, a crew and ambulance has been stationed in Tusayan. On
average, Guardian Medical Transport responds to more than 14,000 calls
for service, demonstrations and stand-by support every year.
As a division of FMC, the primary focus of Guardian Medical Transport is
quality patient care. Our highly trained staff is committed to assisting
the victims of injury and illness. Treating patients is only part of our
job; we see our patients and their family members as part of the same
family: our family.
Often referred to as a mobile emergency room, each ambulance is staffed
with a minimum of one paramedic and one emergency medical technician (EMT).
Our two-person crew provides basic life support and advanced cardiac
life support services using state-of-the-art medical equipment. Under
the direction of an attending FMC physician, crew members are
cross-trained to provide specialty care for adult, pediatric and cardiac
patients.
As diverse as the landscape of Northern Arizona, crew members find that
each call they respond to is as unique as the patient. The Guardian
staff is required to maintain a high level of physical fitness in order
to be prepared for extremely challenging situations. We may need to
backpack, climb through rough terrain or hike through deep snow to reach
a patient. Crews may also deal with extreme environmental conditions
such as heat, cold and moisture.
The ambulance fleet is equipped with 13 four-wheel drive vehicles, which
enable crews to respond to victims in remote areas and in inclement and
snowy conditions.
Guardian Medical Transport also has a Bike Team. The team carries
advanced life support equipment and received specialized training. The bike team
responds to emergent situations with difficult, rough terrain and to
highly congested areas where an ambulance may not have quick access. The
staff also may be contracted to help assist with a special community
event.
Specialized Medical Care:
-
Cardiac Monitor Defibrillator
(Electrocardiogram that identifies if patient is having a heart attack)
-
Pulse oximetry (measures oxygen level
in bloodstream)
-
The only ambulance service in
Northern Arizona approved by the state to participate in a pilot program
for Medication Assisted Intubation. (This procedure is for patients who
are having trouble breathing. The patient is medicated and paralyzed
briefly in order for the paramedic to insert a tube to protect the
airway.)
-
Pre-hospital 12 lead ECG
(Electrocardiogram allows detailed electrical picture of heart to see if
the patient is experiencing a heart attack.) This procedure is the same
as performed in the Emergency department. Heart rhythms can be faxed
from the ambulance to the hospital before patient’s arrival.
Service and Responsiveness:
-
24 hours a day, seven days a week
-
Guardian works cooperatively with
local law enforcement agencies and fire departments to arrive on the
scene of an emergency with basic life support in four minutes or less
within the greater Flagstaff area.
-
Advanced life support is on scene
within eight minutes of a call unless the patient is in an outlying
area.
Standard Medical Equipment:
-
Trauma
-
Advanced Airway
-
Spinal Immobilization
-
Each ambulance is equipped to handle
minor to serious injuries and illnesses.
