David G. Wells, M.D. Memorial Medical
Library at Verde Valley Medical Center
The mission of the VVMC Medical Library is to provide complete, accurate
and up-to-date medical information to physicians, staff, allied health
practitioners, students, patients, and the public in our service area.
This area includes, but is not limited to, Cottonwood, Clarkdale, Camp
Verde, Jerome, Prescott, and Sedona.
Scope of Library

Informational and Educational Resources:
The Library provides current medical books and access to the Internet to
meet the informational and educational needs of the medical and nursing
staffs, administrative and ancillary departments. Currently, the Library
does not loan its books due to its limited collection. A copier is
available for patrons to photocopy portions of text as long as they are
in compliance with the Copyright Law of the United States, Title 17,
United States Code, which governs the making of photocopies or other
reproductions of copyrighted materials.
Information Services: The Library
provides reference responses to phone, e-mail and in-person requests.
The Library will compile computerized bibliographies and process
interlibrary loan requests in a timely manner. The Internet is utilized
as an information resource for the medical community and the public. The
Library is a member of the Arizona Health Information Network (AZHIN)
which is a cooperative network that provides a foundation for
knowledge-based information supporting health care practice and training
in Arizona. AZHIN provides electronic access to the literature databases
most used by physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and allied health
professionals. The databases include MEDLINE, CINAHL, Health Business
Fulltext Elite, Stat!Ref, and other internet resources. (For a complete

The library associate performs searches for patrons and/or will assist
patrons that choose to search on their own. Training for any of these
systems is provided on an as-needed/as-requested basis. AZHIN can be
accessed from an office or home computer by any physician or staff
member that has been issued a password by the VVMC AZHIN Library
director. AZHIN is provided by Verde Valley Medical Center at no cost to
its users.
MedlinePlus is a reliable resource for good health information from the
world's largest medical library, the National Library of Medicine.
Health professionals and consumers alike can depend on it for
information that is authoritative and up to date. MedlinePlus has
extensive information from the National Institutes of Health and other
trusted sources on more than 650 diseases and conditions. There also are
lists of hospitals and physicians, a medical encyclopedia and a medical
dictionary, health information in Spanish, extensive information on
prescription and nonprescription drugs, health information from the
media, and links to thousands of clinical trials. MedlinePlus is updated
daily and can be bookmarked at the URL: medlineplus.gov. There is no
advertising on this site, nor does MedlinePlus endorse any company or
product.
Document Delivery: The Library
will attempt to obtain any needed document or monograph through
interlibrary loan or other appropriate means.
Cooperative Library Services: The
Library maintains active cooperative relationships with local and
non-local libraries. Such cooperation includes interlibrary loans,
collection development, reference referrals, technical processes and
other projects. The David G. Wells, M.D. Memorial Medical Library is a
member of the Pacific Southwest Regional Medical Library Services,
Central Arizona Biomedical Libraries Network, Central Arizona Libraries
Cooperative, the Arizona State Library Association, and the National
Library of Medicine.
The David G. Wells, M.D. Memorial Medical Library utilizes the National
Library of Medicine’s Classification System. The library has a small
collection of core medical texts; however, the majority of the reference
materials are available in full text on AZHIN. The Library Committee
uses a variety of methods for the acquisition of materials including the
Brandon-Hill List for Small Medical Libraries, Library for Internists,
and several Nursing references, reviews and publishing information as
guides for purchase. The CME/Library Committee also considers
recommendations for purchases from the physicians and staff. The Library
is staffed Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Access to the
Library after hours and on weekends is made possible by contacting the
ADON/staffing coordinator at extension 36257 or by asking the operator
for Security. Physicians may use their access code for keyless entry.
