program specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of
Peripheral Vascular Disease.
PVD is a condition in which the arteries that deliver blood to the body
become narrowed or clogged. PVD is caused by atherosclerosis.
PVD is common among individuals more than 50 years old. People with PVD
also have an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. According to the
American Heart Association, as many as 12 million Americans experience
PVD.
Risk factors for PVD:
Smoker
Hypertension
Overweight
Diabetes
Elevated cholesterol
Inactive lifestyle
Family history of heart or vascular problems
Symptoms
Fatigue, aching, cramping or pain in legs, toes or feet while walking
Numbness or weakness in the legs
Slow healing sores on feet or legs
Procedures:
Angioplasty (balloon repair of a narrowed artery)
Stent placement (mesh tube inserted into a narrowed artery)
Atherectomy (removal of plaque within a narrowed artery using a
special catheter to shave away plaque)
